Twenty years ago, when I was a callow fellow who hatched out of the residency program, my initial intent was just
having a taste of specialized orthopedic field. Nevertheless, sometimes flattering myself as being a fairly good tumor
surgeon, I have been engaged in orthopedic oncology ever since. However, about 6 years ago, I realized that all I know
was how to perform surgery rather than understanding the disease itself. Clearly, my lack of perspicacity would be
largely responsible for this kind of enlightenment that came too late; still, there seems to be additional factors
that
make difficult to figure out the pathophysiology underlying the bone tumors.
Firstly, the various diagnostic groupings, the relatively low incidence and prevalence of many of the diagnoses, and
the myriad radiologic feature make bone tumor a source of anxiety.
Secondly, the majority of textbooks are limited to describe the whole spectrum of management, i.e., radiology and
pathology texts focus on the diagnosis while surgery texts more concentrate on the surgical procedure. Further, those
texts usually demonstrate typical findings only. As such, the field of bone tumors intimidates to surgical or medical
trainee and even to experienced practitioners.
Accordingly, I tried to construct a textbook encompassing radiologic diagnosis, treatment, complication, and ultimate
outcome. For better understanding of the disease, this book consists mainly of the radiologic images including various
atypical presentations. Through this book, it is hoped that awareness of these interesting, not infrequently fatal
neoplasm can be raised among medical personnel.
