Description: This is the fourth edition of a softcover companion to one of the major textbooks of critical care
medicine, Irwin and Rippe's Intensive Care Medicine, 5th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2003).
Purpose: This portable rapid access handbook is carefully organized to provide quick access to material presented in
parallel to the parent text, but updated to emphasize recent areas of evolving critical care practice.
Audience: Students in the ICU and junior residents are an appropriate audience for this work. Senior editorial
leadership and many of the authors are from the parent text, which is geographically focused at the University of
Massachusetts.
Features: The book includes 160 chapters and an appendix of common calculations. Consistent with the parent work,
initial chapters describe common critical care procedures including vascular access and endoscopy. Subsequent chapters
follow an organ system approach to critical care with particular emphasis on cardiopulmonary problems. Later sections
include renal, infectious disease, gastrointestinal, pharmacology, environmental and trauma considerations. Unlike the
parent text, an outline format is employed and texture of type allows immediate access to individual topics. Chapters
conclude with an annotated bibliography of original work, some of which dates to within two to three years of
publication. The reference list is short in each case to highlight the most important papers. Tables are frequently
used and occasional black-and-white drawings reproduce with adequate though not outstanding quality. The table of
contents groups chapters by type and lists authorship. The detailed index includes separate citations for figures and
tables.
Assessment: Contributors have effectively used an outline format in this manual. A minor concern is size, because it is
difficult to fit this manual in the lab coat pocket. I enjoyed this work.
