실용의학영어 English for Doctors

편역자 서문

최근 들어 모든 분야에서의 국제 교류의 증가에 따라 한국, 중국, 일본 등 아시아권의 임상 의학은 많은 발전을 거듭하고 있으
며, 동시에 의학 영역 전반에 걸쳐 전 세계와 다각적인 교류가 이루어지고 있습니다. 이러한 현실 아래 많은 의료 종사자들에게
절박하게 요구되는 것은 다양화된 이론 정립과 실제 진료 현장에서 자신들의 의견을 정확하고 상세하게 전달하는 것입니다. 이러
한 목적 달성을 위해 의료 종사자들에게 있어서 언어 특히 영어는 해결되어야만 하는 큰 장벽이며, 그 가운데 특히 의학 영어에
집중해야 할 시점입니다.
본서는 헝가리 University of Pecs의 의과 대학에서 기획되고 출판된 English For Doctors: Authentic Consulting - Room
Activities for Doctors, Dentists, Students and Nurses의 한국어판입니다. Pecs 대학교 의과 대학은 세계적으로 의학 영어 교
육에 있어서 우수한 평가를 받고 있으며, 그 가운데 리더격이자 본서의 저자이신 Maria Gyorffy 교수님은 오랫동안 의사들과 의
과대학 학생들에게 의학영어를 가르쳐 오시면서 의료 관계자가 할 수 있는 한 정확하게 환자와 의사소통할 필요성이 있다고 인식
하시는 가운데 실제 의사와 환자(영어권)의 진찰 기록 등을 근거로 하여 이와 같은 훌륭한 교재를 정리하셨습니다. 본서에서도
알 수 있지만 저자는 영국과 미국 등에서 다수의 교재를 입수해서, 검토하시고 정리하셨으며, 본서의 본질적인 목표는 환자 진료
를 포함한 의료 현장에서 실제로 활용할 수 있는 영어를 익히는 것입니다.
본서는 주요 전문 분야에 따라 13개의 유닛으로 나누어져 있습니다. 각 유닛에는 환자의 호소, 문진, 검사, 치료와 조언 등, 다
양한 장면에서의 회화가 게재되어 있으며, 또한 연습문제에는 독자에게 영어단어를 소개하는 pre-listening activity와 응용문
제 및 어휘(회화를 포함)를 중심으로 한 듣기 섹션이 마련되어 있습니다 유용한 어휘와 어구 표현 등 의학 영어 능력을 향상시키
기 위한 섹션도 제공하고 있습니다. 듣기 섹션에서는 특히 영국 영어와 미국 영어의 표현과 발음을 일부 따로 소개하여 영미 영
어의 차이 인식에도 세심한 배려를 하고 있습니다.
2002년 동경 의과 대학 Patrick Barron 교수님께서 편역하신 일본어판의 출간이 독자들의 뜨거운 호응에 힘입어 2005년 중국어판
이 발간된 것을 포함하여 전 세계 7개국에서 번역판이 나왔으며 우리나라가 8번째 번역판을 갖게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각하며, 부
디 본서가 우리나라 의과 대학생들의 학업과 의료 종사자들의 활동에 실제적인 도움이 되기를 바랍니다.
